What is professional dental hygiene and why you need it too
Tereza Hopanová, DiS.·Dental Hygienist, Dental Hygiene PLUS Prague
Professional dental hygiene is the preventive treatment your toothbrush cannot replicate. Whilst your dentist restores teeth that have already been damaged, a dental hygienist keeps them healthy in the first place — removing biofilm, tartar and stains from the places you simply cannot reach at home.
What happens during an appointment
At Dental Hygiene PLUS we follow the internationally recognised Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol developed by the Swiss manufacturer EMS. A first visit takes 60–75 minutes and includes six clearly defined steps:
- Clinical examination — we assess the health of every tooth and measure pocket depths around the gums (periodontal probing).
- Biofilm disclosing — a gentle dye reveals exactly where plaque is hiding, both for us and for you.
- AIRFLOW® — biofilm and stain removal — a controlled stream of warm water, air and fine erythritol powder gently removes plaque and stains from tea, coffee, red wine or smoking. Safe on enamel, composite fillings, crowns and implants.
- PIEZON® — tartar removal — hardened tartar the AIRFLOW® cannot lift is removed with the piezoelectric PIEZON® NO PAIN ultrasonic system, working comfortably even below the gumline.
- Polishing and fluoride treatment — a smoother surface makes it harder for new biofilm to attach; the fluoride treatment remineralises enamel and reduces sensitivity.
- Personalised home-care coaching and recall plan — the right brush, interdental tools and technique for your mouth, plus the optimal interval for your next visit.
Why home care alone is not enough
No matter how carefully you brush, mineralised plaque forms within 24–72 hours and can only be removed professionally. It typically builds up behind the lower front teeth and around the upper molars, gradually irritating the gums and — if left — leading to gingivitis and periodontitis.
Who should see a dental hygienist
Every adult, ideally twice a year. Patients with orthodontic appliances, implants, extensive prosthetics, diabetes, or those who are pregnant benefit from more frequent visits every three to four months.
Pricing at Dental Hygiene PLUS
A first visit is 2 490 CZK, a regular hygiene 1 990 CZK (55 min) and a short recall 1 490 CZK (25 min). All prices are all-inclusive: examination, consultation, AIRFLOW®, PIEZON® where needed, polishing, fluoride treatment and home-care coaching are always part of the price.
