Teeth whitening in Prague: when it's worth it and why hygiene comes first
Markéta Vrublová, DiS.·Dental Hygienist, Dental Hygiene PLUS Prague
Teeth whitening is one of the most requested aesthetic dental treatments in Prague. But before you commit to an in-office session or a home whitening kit, one thing matters most: without proper dental hygiene first, whitening simply does not work as well as it should — and in some cases can damage enamel and irritate the gums.
The main whitening methods in Prague
- In-office whitening — the strongest hydrogen peroxide gel (25–40 %), applied by a dentist and often activated with an LED lamp. Full result in a single visit; Prague prices typically 6 000–15 000 CZK.
- Home whitening with custom trays — your dentist makes trays to fit your teeth exactly; you wear them at home with a lower-concentration gel (10–20 % carbamide peroxide) for 10–14 days. Price 4 000–8 000 CZK.
- Over-the-counter kits — strips, pens or gels from pharmacies and online. Effect is modest, results uneven, and the risk to gums and enamel higher. Price 300–2 000 CZK.
- Cosmetic whitening studios — under Czech law, only a dentist may apply gels above 0.1 % hydrogen peroxide. Non-clinical studios work with very low concentrations, which effectively means cleaning, not real whitening.
Why dental hygiene must come first
Whitening gel acts on the enamel — but if that enamel is covered with biofilm, tartar, or coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco stains, the gel simply cannot reach it evenly. The result is patchy, streaky, and far less pronounced than it should have been.
More importantly: 30–50 % of the visible discolouration on adult teeth is not inside the enamel at all — it is external staining on the surface, which a dental hygienist removes with EMS AIRFLOW® as part of the Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol. Many patients find that after a proper hygiene visit, they no longer need whitening at all. Healthy gums are also a precondition — bleaching gel on inflamed periodontal tissue is painful and can worsen the inflammation.
What to realistically expect
- External stains (coffee, tea, wine, smoking) — 60–90 % removed by AIRFLOW® alone. Whitening then shifts the shade by another 1–3 steps.
- Naturally yellowish enamel — responds best to whitening; expect a 4–8 step improvement on the Vita shade scale.
- Grey discolouration from tetracycline antibiotics or trauma — responds poorly to whitening; veneers may be the only real option.
- Fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten. A visible filling on a front tooth may need replacing after whitening to match the new shade.
Results typically last 1–3 years depending on lifestyle (coffee, smoking, red wine) and how consistently you keep up with hygiene. Whitening is maintenance, not a one-off transformation.
Risks and contraindications
Whitening is not suitable for everyone. Untreated decay, exposed root surfaces, active gum inflammation, pregnancy and breastfeeding, patients under 16–18, and peroxide allergies are all reasons to postpone or avoid it. Transient tooth sensitivity for 24–72 hours is the most common side-effect; it is milder with in-office treatment because the dentist protects the gums with a barrier and applies remineralising gels.
The sensible path to whiter teeth in Prague
- Book a professional dental hygiene visit — full examination, plaque, tartar and stain removal with GBT and AIRFLOW®. At Dental Hygiene PLUS, 2 490 CZK including consultation.
- Wait two weeks and re-assess. Many patients discover that whitening is no longer needed — AIRFLOW® has already lifted the external staining.
- If you still want to go further, discuss in-office or at-home whitening with your dentist, based on your starting shade, sensitivity and budget.
- Maintain the result with hygiene every 6–12 months and good home care — see our guide on how often to see a dental hygienist.
Summary
There is no shortage of whitening providers in Prague. But if you want a healthy, even, natural-looking result, do not start with the gel — start with dental hygiene. Professional removal of biofilm and stains with GBT and AIRFLOW® is a safe, well-researched route to noticeably whiter teeth. And for many patients, it means no further whitening is needed.
